It was John Harrison who invented the marine chronometer, he lived mainly in the 18th century. He used it to travel from England to Jamaica, the watch having only 2 miles error. Upon return the board refused to pay harrison and his son who accompanied him, the £20 000 prize claiming it was luck. They then offered him £5 000 but he declined, and set off on another voyage to Barbados. They took with them a representative, and were again astonishingly acuarate to the destination, Parliment offered them £10 000 and the other half when they handed over the design to watchmakers.
