| greentree90 answers: Constantinople first picked up the name Istanbul when it was taken over by the Ottoman Turks in the 1450s, but it kept Constatinople as its official name until the Republic of Turkey was founded. The official name was changed to Istanbul in 1930.
Angola has a similar timline, although it's name has changed several times over the course of the Greek, Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman control of the city. The name was offcially changed to Ankara at the establishment of the Republic of Turkey in 1923 when Attaturk made it the capital. 3 years ago / reply
