Will running a 230v mitre saw on uk 240V mains do any harm?

asked in voltage, mitre saw

DragonsDen answers:

No, 230 volts is the standard in the UK. Some while ago, the specifications were changed from 240V to 230V (+10%, -6%) to allow harmonisation across Europe.

Not necessarily, historically in the UK the supply voltage was a nominal 240V AC and the rest of Europe was 220 V AC. In the spring of 1993 the UK Government agreed to align with the rest of Europe and accepted the nominal rated voltage of 230V.

The UK Government resisted the change due to the cost of changing over, having to replace supply transformers. On the 9th March 1993 the UK Government accepted the standard rated voltage of 230V, but provided wider limits were allowed, these were from 225 - 254V from January 2003.

So, in spite of the apparent alignment, the UK electricity supply industry made no actual change to supply voltage. The Plans to harmonise the whole of Europe to 230V ±10% , which were due to be applied from 1st January 2003, have been postponed until 2008 at the earliest.

When operated in UK this European equipment, in some cases, will not operate at optimum performance. Depending on the type of heater, it will almost certainly run hotter at the higher voltage in the UK. In extreme cases it could become unsafe.

xoloriib answers:

Appliances / tools that meet the standards of whatever country you're living in have a 10% allowance so 230 volts means 207 to 253 volts is ok.
A new tv will operate on 90 volts because of new components included in all tvs now so that they meet international standards.
