| KentPDG answers: A foolish myth. Yet many of such items of "folk wisdom" have a purpose -- such as not walking under ladders, which may not avoid bad luck but helps avoid having tools or paint fall on your head.
Here, the emphasis is not on the threat of warts, but on the importance of washing one's hands. Egg white residue may not be very visible on the back of one's hand, but it is an excellent medium for bacteria to grow; and that could infect something else, like your dinner salad.
The Old Wives learned that it's not effective to preach "Wash your hands or you will spread disease" -- the response is just yeah, yeah, go away old lady. They can't claim that everything causes "bad luck" -- ladders and black cata and mirrors already monopolized that threat. So someone invented the threat that egg whites would cause warts; and of course, no one wants another wart. So hands got washed, more than they would have been without the warning.
No one with a shred of sense takes the warning about warts seriously. But you whould take the injunction about washing hands seriously, especially if you are handling food. 3 years ago / reply
