Are there any traditions about what happened to Jesus' gold?
The three wise men gave the baby Jesus gold, frankincense and myrrh. But what happened to them? Presumably there was enough value there to allow Joseph to retire from the carpentry business completely.

I think the Bible is silent on the subject, but has anyone ever suggested why Jesus' family weren't wealthy? (Or maybe they were?) Were the quantities of gold etc just nominal? Did they have to leave it all behind when they fled to Egypt?

They probably donated it to a fund to cover the costs for printing the New Testament.

Jesus himself didn't seem to hold down a proper job so maybe he just used his birthday trust fund to live off while preaching

Being intrigued by your question I dug about a bit more. It seems, since, as you said, the bible gives little away on the wealth of Jesus or otherwise people have tried to put their own interpretation on this subject.

There are several preachers, mostly Americans, who believe in a prosperity doctrine. They claim that Jesus was rich and quote passages from the bible that they claim supports their view. Others cynically suggest that these beliefs are just trying to justify why a preacher can drive around in a Mercedes and live in a mansion.

They start with the gold, frankincense and myrrh given to the baby Jesus. These were gifts that the three kings thought they were bringing to a new born king so would have been of incredible value to a humble carpenter’s family. They claim that Jesus had so much money that he needed a treasurer to keep track of it. (The New Testament describes Judas as the "treasurer" for Jesus' disciples).

Also, they claim, he wore clothes so expensive that the Roman soldiers who crucified him gambled for them. It is described in the bible as a “seamless robe” which would have been exception in those days, a robe made from a single piece of cloth.

The traditional preachers who generally proclaim that Jesus was a poor man usually quote him saying “it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of the needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God." This is supposed to prove that, not only was Jesus poor but, he disliked the rich.

In fact, the "eye of the needle" was an ancient passageway entering Jerusalem that was so small that a camel had to drop to its knees to squeeze through. The believers in the prosperity doctrine claim that Jesus was therefore not saying it was impossible as the saying initially implies.

Heres a couple of the links I found showing different viewpoints but the truth is, we’ll never really know.
