Is there any way of making a free website?
I have a server and i want to host a website from it.
I was told it was possible by a freind but he did not know how.
Is it the sort of thing of having your own web domain (e.g. .com, .net) and then making websites from it.
I have Windows Server 2003/2008 so if you know any way of doing it put me in the right direction.
Thank you

| Aiming4777 answers: There's not much point to be honest. Basic web hosting is so cheap that its not worth the hassle of having to maintain a server yourself. Since you will have to register your domain address, you may as well get the same company to host it for you. Unless you plan to have so much data available on you Website that its too much trouble to upload it all. 3 years ago / reply

Firstly, for it to be of any use, your PC needs to be on and available 24/7.
You need a web server, you say you have Windows Server 2003 / 2008 but you need to ensure that it has IIS web server included.
The server PC needs to be fully secured against attack. Running a home PC as an Internet server is vastly more risky than just connecting to the Internet. By definition, you need to encourage people to find your computer and connect to it.
You need to be able to find your PC by entering a web address. This means you need to register with a DNS service who will also supply the software to allocate a static IP address to your PC. (Most PCs have a dynamic address when connected to the internet). You then need to register your chosen web address (eg www.myaddress.com) and forwarded to your DNS address.
You need an Internet Service Provider who is happy for you to run a web server at home; most aren’t, not without charging much higher fees.
