Do people who have been 'brainwashed' by extremist groups receive any special treatment to de-program them when detained at HM's pleasure?
I just read about the 'schoolboy terrorist' - what support will he get to learn that the jihadist ideas of killing all non-Muslims is wrong? Personally, I'd want to be sure that he is not still a violent extremist before he is released from custody.
asked in brainwashing, treament, prison

The idea of programming / de-programming people is one that is fraught with danger.
There are two real issues :-
- While we might all agree that someone with violent terrorist or anti-social tendencies might be a good candidate, where does the line come. Do you try to re-program someone who thinks 'Osama bin Laden' is a "Nice Guy" - but does not show any indication of direct action. OK, maybe that is acceptable but what about those that are non-conformist in other ways. Do you re-program someone who thinks our current Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, is an idiot (OH, I am sorry, that is conformist, isn't it).
- The second danger is that, once the treatment is complete, you say that is OK and they are no longer a danger to society - but you don't really know.
