Should Adverts for any form of gambling be allowed on TV
It seems strange that smoking adverts are banned as the ruin your health, but any form of gambling ruins whole families so why is it allowed

| CGA answers: I can understand where you are coming from because I know that I could easily become addicted to gambling myself - so I won't let myself start. I certainly did start down that road when I was young but managed to pull back from the brink.
The problem is that, if someone wants to gamble, they will do so and find a way. I do find the gambling adverts unsavoury but they are normally on late at night along with other, equally unsavoury items.
I don't like it but I doubt you can legislate against all the things that could be harmful. 3 years ago / reply

| seacommander answers: This is a difficult question to answer since if one says no, what do we do about programmes and advertising connected with the national lottery? I don’t think that there is a place to rationally distinguish between all the different gambling games available. The lottery is out and out gambling in the same way as roulette for example, and the level of knowledge required to enter the lottery is in general far less than say that possessed by a horse racing punter who studies form. The lottery ‘gets away’ by allocating a proportion of its income to so called good causes; but it is still a profit making business. I think the only fair solutions are i) ban it all or ii) permit it all – there are just to many grey areas to start picking and choosing 3 years ago / reply

| xoloriib answers: Gambling is a big problem in NSW (where I live) but the government makes a lot of its revenue from gambling. There have been changes to the law which have seen a decrease in the number of poker machines in clubs / pubs. For anyone who is not familiar poker machine is an Australian term for a slot / fruit / card machine or as they used to be very aptly called in the UK a one-armed-bandit.
I think that some forms of gambling are more acceptable but the most sensible thing that can be done is education. There are many government sponsored gamblers' rehabilitation courses throughout Australia.
I have seen advertising for the Spring Racing Carnival at various racecourses. Though it is easy to gamble there I think the day out and the spectacle of such events are mostly beneficial for most people. 3 years ago / reply
