By analogy, picture it as the world. Each ISP could be a country, each house in the country a computer known by a string that you know as the URL. When you try and send data to a machine, you first need to know the IP address, which is contained in a big address book. ISPs have copies of this address book, but there are central ones too. The data is analogous to letters
