Why do we often talk about 'changing the beds' when all we are going to do is change the sheets?
What is the origin of this expression?

| duffield1 answers: History - from the time when our beds were made up of straw and organic matter. Over time, it would become flat and hard, so you would literally swap over the old straw for fresh straw, thus changing the bed.
As we moved onto beds made with straps of fabric on a frame, the name continued (but that's where we get 'sleep tight' from - the time when loose straps meant a bad night's sleep!), although we no longer change the straw but just the bed linen. 3 years ago / reply
